A Message From Julie

INTRODUCING:
A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY

A play, adapted for performance by Julie Nicholson and Helen Currie
From the novel by J L Carr

Performance in Shipton Moyne Church, 6th and 7th November 2026

Over the past couple of years I have been co-writing a play, adapted from a novel I have been a fan of for many years. The novel tells a story of restoration and hope, set post first world war, in the north country, featuring a young artist who has returned home to London damaged by war and abandoned by his wife. The artist takes up a commission to restore a medieval wall painting in a village church and finds refuge in his work and the community. The story depicts not only the restoration of the painting, but also of the young man’s restoration and renewal. The artist’s ‘month in the country’ is funny, poignant, full of warmth, hope and community spirit.

The adaptation of the novel for performance has been given permission by the estate of the author and their agent, for two performances in Shipton Moyne Church, to coincide with Remembrance.

The production is character and ensemble based involving various means of storytelling, including a Greek style chorus, and live music. Jem and Gem Hodgson are working with me on the production providing staging and technical expertise, alongside the support of both churchwardens and the village trust.

Although auditions and casting have begun, I am particularly keen to involve members of the village. Rehearsals will begin at the start of September with an ensemble/chorus workshop (in the hall) and informal playreading (in the pub) during the summer.

If you are interested in being involved in the production, either in a performance role, or production support role, backstage etc., I would love to hear from you if you have a skill or enthusiasm to offer. Or indeed if you would like to know more about the project before committing yourself.

For anyone interested in a performance role, I am interested in people of all abilities, experienced or novice. The main consideration is commitment to learning lines and rehearsing. Rehearsals will mainly be in the village on Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons with some flexibility for family/work/school commitments.

I’m particularly interested in hearing from a girl with an acting age range of 14 to 16; a female with acting range 18 to 30; male with acting range 40 to 60; also, people who can play an instrument (any level) and might like to play in an integrated band within the ensemble. This may be of interest to people who wish to be involved with fewer rehearsals.

I really hope this is of interest as another great Shipton Moyne production.
